De Natuurverdubbelaars conducted research on behalf of the Central Government Real Estate Agency (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf) into the value that can be realized through the ‘nature percentage scheme’. This scheme involves a nature percentage regulation for government real estate and was the winner of the 2021 RVB Innovation Award. Through this scheme, part of the outdoor space of government buildings is returned to nature, a “gift to nature.” The goal is to improve local ecology, giving nature the opportunity to further develop and form ecological networks, with the added benefit of creating a pleasant working environment.
In April, our colleague Merlissa Diele presented interesting insights from the report at the Kennis Indoor Dialoog of the Central Government Real Estate Agency, a monthly event where interesting projects from the agency are shared. She discussed how nature can be valued, but also why we need to be cautious in doing so and what caveats should be considered. She explained how the nature percentage scheme can generate value and provided the recommendations we made to the Central Government Real Estate Agency.
