In February 2024, we presented the results of the research we conducted in collaboration with Wij.land and several regional partners on the earning potential of nature-inclusive dairy farming in the report ‘Onder de Streep 2023’.

The economic analysis of the 45 participating dairy farmers in this project provides insight into the various challenges and opportunities for a viable business model in nature-inclusive dairy farming. Based on this baseline measurement, we have mapped out the main opportunities and challenges related to the earning potential of nature-inclusive dairy farming.

In addition to the analysis, we conducted an in-depth study into the differences between organic and non-organic certified companies within this study group. In this in-depth study, we further explore the earning potential of organic dairy farmers and compare it with non-organic dairy farmers from the study group. Organic milk sales are an important earning strategy for nature-inclusive dairy farming: within the study group, the most extensive companies (with a milk production of up to 10,196 kg per hectare in 2021) consist entirely of organic dairy farmers. But how important is organic certification for earning potential? And what are the economic costs and benefits of certification? We address these and several other in-depth questions in the report ‘Onder de Streep 2023: In-Depth Economic Analysis: Organic and Non-Organic Dairy Farms’.
