What could art mean for the transition in the agricultural sector? Artist Cathalijne Smulders and architect Tanja Schell worked for a project of the CALL (Circular Art Lab Limburg) to define the smell of pigs and the pig farming industry. When people think of the smell of pig, they often think of the smell of pig manure. The aim of the project was to develop a complex smell that includes more than manure alone: the smell of the farm, the smell of the skin of the pig and the smell of pig feed. The result is ‘Pig perfume’: a fragrance based on lard that combines all smells of the farm. The fragrance stimulates farmers and consumers to think about agriculture. Besides, the special project shows that by looking from a different angle, something of value could arise.
The Circular Art Lab Limburg linked artist and designers to sustainability issues and chose Pig Perfume as winner from the notified projects. Daan Groot, co-founder of Nature^Squared, was part of the professional jury.
